Paint Correction
Paint correction is the process of removing all defects in the car’s finish such as micro scratches, swirl marks and scratches returning the finish to the way it came from the manufacture or better. Some people refer to this as cut and buff, but it is better described as the technique used in the paint correction process. Before starting to correct any of the processes listed below, the vehicle must first be clay bared in order to remove any impurities trapped in the paint’s surface that could be picked up by the buffer and introduce even more micro scratching (see Fig. 1.)

Micro Scratches:
Micro scratches (see Fig. 2) are usually caused from improper washing from not using a chamois and a microfiber towel to dry the vehicle or using a brush to wash the vehicle instead of a fluffy wash mitt. Usually these are the easiest to be removed by using a fine compound and a polishing pad (see Fig. 3).

Swirl Marks:
Swirl marks are more severe scratches in the paint (see Fig. 4) ) and are usually caused from taking the car to the car wash or a touchless car wash that uses brushes. They can also be introduced to the paint by drying the car with a bath towel.
Removal of these scratches is usually done in a 3-step process starting with a cutting compound to cut down to the depth of the deepest swirl mark. Then a second compound is used to remove the fine scratches left from the cutting compound, and finally a polishing compound is used to bring back the luster
(see Fig. 5).
If it’s a show car an ultra-fine polish and pad can be used in the fourth step. This is called jeweling the paint. Before any of the above can be done a paint meter MUST be used to check the depth of the paint (see Fig. 6) to see if there is enough clear coat to work with. Since the clear coat is only 1.2 millimeters(mms) thick from the manufacture it is strongly recommended that you do not remove more than .3 mms of the clear coat.
Cars that have previously been buffed at the used car lot may not have enough clear coat to be buffed again. In this case a trip to the paint shop is the only alternative.

Scratches:
These take experience to know whether to completely remove or blend them in so they can no longer catch the eye (see Fig. 7). Since the clear coat is only 1.2 mms thick and most auto manufactures do not recommend removing more than .3 mms of the clear coat for paint corrections, a paint meter MUST be used (see Fig. 6) in order to see how thick the paint is and if there is enough clear coat to work with without having to repaint the car. In this process the scratch must be first wet sanded to level or smoothed out with the surrounding paint before buffing. Usually a cutting pad and cutting compound are used to remove the scuff marks from the sand paper, then a medium pad and a lighter compound are used to bring back the shine in the finish. Finally, a polishing pad is used with a fine polish to bring the paint’s luster back (see Fig. 8).
